Study visit to Council of Europe, Strasburg, 1-3 October 2012

On 1-3 October 2012 ILGA-Europe organised a study visit to Council of Europe institutions for 5 LGBT activists from Turkey.

The study visit aimed to familiarise the activists to the work of the Council of Europe, to explain how various Council of Europe institutions defend human rights and can support them in their work. It also aimed to give the activists direct exposure to the institutions and opportunity to raise the human rights concerns of LGBT people in Turkey with relevant CoE officials.

During the visit they have been introduced to the work of different CoE institutions, met with the office of the Commissioner for Human Rights; the secretariat of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI); the Directorate for human rights and non-discrimination and LGBT Unit, with the Parliamentary Assembly General Reporter on rights of LGBT people. They also met with the legal adviser of Turkish Permanent Representation in CoE and with the leader of Turkish Delegation to Parliamentary Assembly. In addition, they attended the hearing of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of X.& Others v Austria and the Parliamentary assembly debate on the report on Russia of the Monitoring Committee.
